The whole endeavor of Prabhupada was that he was trying to get people to that level of serving purely Radha and Krishna !

Introduction about HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj:

Hare Krishna. Welcome to Books are the basis 2026. I’m your host on behalf of the ISKCON Ministry of Education and today we talk about Srila Prabhupada as the pre-eminent Siksha Guru, and we’re very grateful and honored to have with us His Holiness Bhanu Maharaj. Hare Krishna Maharaj, thank you so much.

Hare Krishna. Bhanu Maharaj is a disciple of Srila Prabhupada, a sannyasi, a GBC member, was born in Canada and met the devotees first in Tokyo, and received initiation from Srila Prabhupada in 1971 in India. And when not travelling, Maharaj is based in Chennai, South India, and Maharaj is known especially as a scholar and his tremendous contribution, very important contribution to translating hundreds of Sanskrit texts.

So we’re very grateful to have you with us to talk about this important topic of Prabhupada as our Siksha Guru. We often speak about how Srila Prabhupada plays a very important role in the life of all the devotees, even today, as Prabhupada lives, continues living through his books. And we’d like to ask you, Maharaj, when did you first begin to experience Srila Prabhupada, not only as a historical founder, but also as a living guide in your spiritual life. How Prabhupada is present in his books? Would you like to share some realization on that?

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj:

I guess [Laughs] in the beginning of the movement, there was not much literature available, like in 1969, 1970, whatever. I met devotees in Japan, and there wasn’t, I didn’t get any literature actually, I got a Back to Godhead magazine, and that was kind of all the literature we had. There was some, I think, teachings of Prahlada [Laughs], that was there, and Back to Godhead magazine. And I think the, I don’t know, the devotees had a few books, like, you know, the abridged Bhagavad Gita or something, but the copies were not even available. So we didn’t have books, like that was the first six months when I saw devotees and whatever. So there were no books as such. So even, so Prabhupada was kind of unknown [Laughs] in one sense [Laughs], but then Prabhupada came to Japan, and that’s how I met him [Laughs].

So I got direct contact with Prabhupada, it wasn’t through the book so much as through Prabhupada himself. Of course, because the devotees were, you know, preaching Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam, whatever, then that was Prabhupada’s words also. But that’s how I first got contact through Srila Prabhupada. And I noticed at that time, he came to Tokyo on his way to India, and he was there to negotiate with Dai Nippon Printing Press for printing books, and out of that came, I think, Krishna book and a few other books as well. So I think Krishna book had come out, so he was very proud that, that had been presented, because it was a quite a big book, and it was full of wonderful pictures, etc. So [Laughs] that was something.

And so I just noticed that he was very interested in translating and publishing books. I didn’t know at that time that the whole purpose of this was to create a solid foundation for a movement which would last. But then I kind of realized that later on, that all of this was an endeavor to create a lasting movement. Because usually we see that movements rise and fall, and very few of them have literature. So we have things like TM and other movements, and nothing there really. So the movements kind of disappear after 10 years, after the founder disappears. So Prabhupada had a different strategy, and that was to preserve the message of the Acharyas and his own mission through the books.

Devotee: I think that’s a very relevant point. When we talk of books, books are the basis, how Prabhupada had that in mind, knowing the importance from the very beginning.

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Yeah. I noticed that in the beginning he was always stressing that this is not a new movement, and it’s not an imaginary concocted movement by some new swami or anything. It’s a tradition [Laughs]. So the only way you can establish the tradition is by actually referring backwards to the original sources, so Lord Caitanya and the Goswamis, etc.

Devotee: Yeah, so Prabhupada presented himself as a member of a parampara.

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Yeah, and he’s simply mouthing whatever was previously done. So in other words, the parampara is emphasized, not that he’s made something new.

Devotee: Yeah, and how has your relationship with Srila Prabhupada changed over the years through studying his books? You mentioned in the beginning there were no books, actually, and then you met Prabhupada personally. You had a personal association. I believe you also traveled in India with Prabhupada. But then later on over the years, also after Prabhupada left, you continued studying Prabhupada’s books. So maybe you’d like to share how your relation has been changed or deepened.

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Yeah, so by studying the books and then practicing Krishna consciousness, my realization has been that Prabhupada is acting like, he mentions in some of his works of the transparent via media [Laughs], which is a kind of a unique word, but it’s easily understood. In other words, something is transmitted exactly without distortion, because the person has some purity. So that’s actually what Prabhupada is trying to do through all of his works. So he’s just kind of acting as a funnel to express the message of Lord Caitanya and the Goswamis. So that’s kind of an impressive thing.

Devotee: Sorry, Maharaj, could you adjust the camera just slightly again, so just that sometimes your chin is kind of underneath.

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: I think I lean forward, that’s why, I don’t know.

Devotee: Yeah, that’s good. And maybe there have to be moments when you felt personally corrected or challenged or lovingly instructed by Srila Prabhupada through his books, that you have read something and you felt, wow, this is Prabhupada speaking to me directly, personally. Have you had such a kind of experience?

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: No, I don’t remember anything so exactly [Laughs]. The main thing is that I’m particularly struck with his commentary or his reference to Vishwanath Chakravarti’s comment on the vyavasāyātmikā buddhi [Bg. 2.41], a quote in the Bhagavad Gita that you should have one pointed intelligence [Laughs]. And he said he was inspired by that to start preaching in the West. And so I got a little curious about, what does that mean?

So then I went back to Vishwanath Chakravarti’s commentary and I read that commentary [Laughs]. And there he’s talking about how you have to just dedicate yourself to Krishna and then you follow the order of Guru. So that’s kind of what he was referring to. Then he also mentions, of course, what is the order of Guru. So the ultimate order of Guru is not you just do this, wash the floor, whatever. But ultimate order of Guru is you serve the lotus feet of Radha and Krishna, that ultimately all the orders, you culminate in how you can perfectly serve Krishna, Radha and Krishna. So I think his whole endeavor of all that he was doing is trying to get people to that level of serving purely Radha and Krishna.

So all the instructions are there, all the philosophy is there, but ultimately that’s the whole purpose of everything [Laughs]. And so his spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, gave him that one message, you preach to the English-speaking public. So then, of course, he tried in India, it didn’t work so well. So then he took it literally [Laughs], he gets some English-speaking people [Laughs], they are Indian [Laughs]. Then he went to America and did it and actually succeeded.

So then he said, I’m just following order of my spiritual master. So that’s kind of an interesting instruction, inspiring instruction, just to try to follow exactly what the Guru says, and then whatever success you have, that’s, we can say, the mercy of Guru [Laughs]. So he was very humble because he’s just accepting, I did nothing, actually, I’m just trying to follow the order of Gurus, the order, because I’m trying to do that, then I get the mercy of Guru.

Yeah, thank you for sharing. We speak of mood and mission when we study Prabhupada’s books, one’s study aim in Sastric Studies to understand Prabhupada’s mood and mission, and I think your example is very beautiful because it expresses Prabhupada’s heart, how he was so much dedicated to his own spiritual master. Maybe, when we speak of Prabhupada as the Siksha Guru, what is the difference between respecting Prabhupada as the Founder Acharya and actually taking shelter of him as an ongoing Siksha Guru? What does it mean to accept Prabhupada as a Siksha Guru?

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Actually, the word Siksha Guru was a little bit foreign to us in the beginning of the movement, we didn’t know anything about that [Laughs]. I think the first reference comes up in the Caitanya Caritamrta, when that came out in about 1974 or something like that, then the Adi Lila talks about Siksha Guru and Diksha Guru, so that was kind of an introduction. It didn’t still make too much sense at that time because when we talk of Guru, we didn’t really distinguish one from the other because Prabhupada was the only Guru, so he was just Guru, finished [Laughs]. So Siksha Guru, Diksha Guru, they were just kind of abstract terms for us, you know.

But since his disappearance, then I think the role of Siksha and Diksha and their different natures have somewhat been enlightened. I think most devotees are still a little bit unclear because they don’t really understand anything except my initiating Guru, that’s about it. And so Siksha and Diksha, it’s like, you know, what is that Siksha, and their initiating spiritual master is the Siksha Guru, Diksha Guru, everything. And there’s not much of a differentiation of function. Though we do find, if we look closely in Caitanya Caritamrta, we will find that Prabhupada does make some distinction there, because he says Harinama does not need a Diksha Guru, it doesn’t depend on a Diksha Guru. So then you get freaked out by that statement [Laughs]. We don’t need initiation anymore.

And then, you know, Prabhupada explains what Diksha is in the purport, even then it becomes a little bit unclear. But the idea is that we have a parampara and it is not even traced through Diksha, though that’s the traditional way of doing it, even in the Gaudiya Sampradaya, we trace it by Siksha. And people look at that, and they’re a little puzzled, this is not, you know, parampara, because they expect Diksha line, and Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati traced the Siksha line, to emphasize the fact that the Siksha is actually the most important thing.

And that the Diksha, technically the Diksha, which is getting a mantra in second initiation, that is a secondary feature of, you know, conveying the Sampradaya. The main thing is you have to understand the teachings that are coming down. So that’s why there’s emphasis on the Siksha. So we can say that ultimately that is how the movement will be preserved in the future. Not by a mantra you get at second initiation, it’s by the teachings. And to preserve those teachings, and 500 years ago, or 1000 years up in the future, it’s the teachings that should be preserved properly [Laughs]. And we may have the mantra, whatever, it doesn’t really matter. So that the secret mantra, that is the Diksha mantra. So the main element is the teachings along with Hare Krishna, which is Nama, rather than the mantra. So those things have to be, are the main elements of our teaching, in terms of theory or whatever. And it’s also our main practice. We read scripture every day, and we chant Hare Krishna every day. So these are the main elements [Laughs], and they will be passed down in the future. Together. So, we have to have a Siksha line.

So as I mentioned, Prabhupada was, even though he was preaching around the world, a lot of his effort was taken into translating. So when he was in America, he was there with his typewriter, and then he came up with the Bhagavad Gita, and then he started, they gave him a dictaphone, so then he was doing Bhagavatam, and then he did Caitanya Caritamrta, so he put a lot of effort into that. As well as the direct preaching. So, that was in order to ensure this continuity of Sampradaya into the future, particularly ISKCON Sampradaya, into the future. So Prabhupada is represented by his books. So, in one sense we can say the Siksha is the books [Laughs].

So Prabhupada wrote the books, and we are taking that Siksha. So this is how the Siksha parampara goes on. So, as I said in the beginning, we’re not quite aware of how this Siksha was operating, and now that we’re, you know, many years later, 40 years later or so, we do see the necessity of emphasizing the teachings, and emphasizing Srila Prabhupada.

Now, we have a rather unique system, in the sense that we just don’t have one guru, but we have many gurus in terms of Diksha, what we call Diksha gurus. And at the same time, we see that our Diksha gurus have had problems in the past and whatever, and so therefore people can criticize like the Ritviks, etc. So, we have to select an ideal guru. So, one way of doing that is making Prabhupada the Diksha guru, as they do with the Ritviks, or we make Prabhupada the ideal Siksha guru, which is natural. So, we see in many Sampradayas, like the Ramanuja Sampradaya, even though it is 1,000 years after Ramanujacharya was present, they still refer to him as their guru [Laughs], in spite of the fact they have a living guru. Still, the great reverence is given for that original guru over a thousand years. So, that is how a Siksha line continues. So, we should probably have the same attitude within ISKCON.

So, actually in about 2014, the GBC Act actually passed a resolution, or a statement, saying that Prabhupada is the pre-eminent Siksha Guru for all disciples now and in the future. So, he is a Siksha guru who continues. Usually we think of guru as someone who is present now. So, we have Siksha gurus and Diksha gurus, but Prabhupada is a special Siksha guru who is not presently living, but lives on because he is the Founder Acharya, but that can’t just be a name. It is based on something [Laughs]. So, the teachings are the basis. So, whatever Prabhupada wrote, that becomes the means by which you can connect with Srila Prabhupada. The same with Ramanujacharya. He’s not just a figurehead, but he’s the one that wrote works, significant works. And based on that, then others following him wrote works as well, but he was the person who wrote all the essential works of their Sampradaya.

So, Prabhupada is acting like that for us. A little bit unique, of course, because what Prabhupada is presenting is none other than what previous Acharyas presented. So, he’s just passing on the message of, you know, Baladeva Vidyabhusana’s commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, or the commentaries of Vishwanath and Goswamis in the Bhagavatam, etc. So, in one sense, he’s just passing on and commenting on that. So, he’s acting as a medium for that. But we have as a Gaudiya Sampradaya, we have ISKCON, founded by Srila Prabhupada.

So, it’s like a sub-branch or something within that. And so, then Prabhupada becomes like the Founder Acharya of that. In Harinama Cintamani, Bhaktivinoda Thakur talks about the head of the Sampradaya, or Founder of the Sampradaya, are designated as special Siksha Gurus [Laughs] like that. So, he’s not the Founder of the whole movement, Lord Caitanya is the Founder of the Goswamis, but he is the Founder of our particular, you know, subgroup. So, therefore, then we take him as the Founder Acharya and the pre-eminent Siksha Guru. So, it’s necessary to emphasize that, one, for continuity of the principles, so that we don’t deviate in the future and invent new philosophies [Laughs] and we keep our standards. And the other is to keep unity within ISKCON.

So, in spite of the many initiating spiritual masters and the loyalty to them, we should have greater loyalty to Srila Prabhupada. So, that sounds a little strange, because usually we just emphasize, you sacrifice everything to the order of your living Guru, initiating Guru. But those statements are made, but then there are other statements to say that you respect Guru, maybe your Diksha guru, but if there’s a Guru that you accept who is superior, you give more respect to him. So, if you have a Siksha guru who is on a higher level, then you give even greater respect to him. And that’s not a disrespect to your other Guru, the two are cooperating together.

And he makes the further point, and further point is made in Krishna Bhajanamrta that, it is not just within spiritual circles, but even in the material world, we give respect to many. So, you give respect to your father, and you also give respect to your mother, and you also give respect to the brothers of your father [Laughs], your uncles [Laughs], equal respect. And you can’t disrespect them in any way. But then you give even more respect to the grandfather, double respect. So, then everybody is treated as God in one sense, but grandfather is more God [Laughs], double God [Laughs]. So, like that, we have to get a conception like that. You know, we’re surrendering to Guru, etc., but then there is amounts of that surrender and worship, etc. So, therefore, we have to put the primary emphasis on Srila Prabhupada, ultimately, for the benefit of ISKCON.

Devotee: Wow, that’s beautifully explained. Thank you so much. Some devotees also say that sometimes we find two extremes, like Prabhupada’s books are enough, or other emphasize the living sadhu or living guidance. So, how can we avoid the both extremes, or how can we balance that?

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Yeah, so, theoretically, of course, we can say, if we accept Prabhupada as the primary Siksha Guru, etc., then all we have to do is read Srila Prabhupada’s books, or listen to his tape recordings, or [Laughs] his videos [Laughs], etc. So, that’s the extreme we can say. So, in one sense, true, but we know that, if we take the example of Sampradaya itself, when they talk about Siksha Guru and Diksha Guru, they’re generally talking about people who are living at that present time. So, you have a Diksha Guru who gives you the mantra, and you have a Siksha Guru who gives you the teachings. And if your Diksha Guru cannot give the teachings, you go to another person who gives the teachings. So, that’s the primary usage of that term. But as I said, then we have the extended Guru with the Founder Acharya, who may be a thousand years apart in the case of Madhvacharya. So, in the case of Prabhupada also, now that it is two generations later, then he’s acting in that capacity. So, even though he is that Guru, this does not deny that you also take living people as Gurus.

We are, as human Jivas, not perfect and full of ignorance and imperfections, etc. So, even if we get the teachings purely, still we don’t understand them properly [Laughs]. And we can always make mistakes [Laughs]. And thus, we do need someone there who says, okay, now you’re getting the wrong meaning there. You got to correct yourself. And this is what it actually means. So, there’s always that possibility for us of, in spite of the clarity of things, that again, people start making mistakes. And that’s what we will see in history itself. We have Caitanya Mahaprabhu and then he has the Goswamis. Okay, you’ve heard what I said and you can repeat that to others. But you write it all down [Laughs]. So, they write everything down and they give the instructions nicely. But then later on, someone else has to come in again, clarify the instructions again. So, we have different Acharyas through the time coming down.

So, we have Vishwanath Chakravarti and Baladeva Vidyabhusana, again, commenting on the same things [Laughs]. Jiva Goswami has written his commentaries in the Sandarbha on the Bhagavatam. And then we have Vishwanath Chakravarti later on writing commentary in the Bhagavatam [Laughs]. So, it needs repetition over time, especially when you get long periods of time. Then the longer you get, the more likely you are to deviate [Laughs] and get into something else [Laughs]. So, we have Prabhupada. We have the first generation and they can speak. Then we have another generation. And so, Prabhupada gets communicated by his works. And he gets communicated by whoever was present with him to the next generation. And then the next generation, they can communicate Prabhupada from what they’ve heard from the followers of Srila Prabhupada [Laughs] and in the future. So, it goes on and on like that.

So, there’s always possibility on the way that as it goes on, people get misunderstanding or whatever. So, we can’t guarantee foolproof transmission, but at least there’s some safeguard by having not just the books, but also having living persons who were instructed by someone, by someone, by someone, who was eventually [Laughs] instructed by Srila Prabhupada. So, somehow we get something of the original there also.

So, that’s why we also need a living guru. And we will see in ISKCON, this is a problem. People read things in Prabhupada’s works and they say, this is what Prabhupada said, we have to do that. Another one reads and says, no, we have to do this. And then they start arguing. And then they say, oh, you’re not following, you’re not following Prabhupada at all. You know, you’re not of proper authority. I’ll go off on my own and do this instead. So, that’s because, you know, we have this, what did Prabhupada say? What did he make most important? And what is the absolute statement? And people will have controversy about that.

So, you know, there’s always controversy is going to arise. So, we need some authority to tell us, okay, this is what we should do [Laughs]. So, apart from just the message of the scripture, there’s also the message, the policy itself, which is a little more, you know, difficult to argue sometimes because Prabhupada says different things in different circumstances. So, we have to have some clarification, not only in philosophy, but also on policy, etc. So, therefore, we do need living persons to keep that on because we’re an organization, apart from the philosophy, we’re an organization. So, how do we run the organization? What do we emphasize? We need someone practically to give guidance on that. Otherwise, everybody’s their own authority and we have disintegrating movement.

Devotee: That’s also a reason why we have this books are the basis festival or week and having these interviews to hear from personalities like yourself, who actually, you know, associated with Prabhupada.

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: When we had the, when Gopala Bhatta was there in the, you know, doing the strategic planning, he was emphasizing this fact that now we’re going into the next generation, next generation. So, you know, whatever Prabhupada said goes on and it gets kind of diluted as we go each generation. So [Laughs] we have to record everything that the first generation hear from Prabhupada [Laughs]. Otherwise, we get more and more dilution as we go on. So, somehow we have to, you know, report everything that they say and somehow try to understand that. So, we get something of Prabhupada’s message intact [Laughs].

Devotee: Sometimes we see they do read Prabhupada’s books, but then still they feel distance from Prabhupada. They don’t connect so deeply to Prabhupada, although they read. Could you, what could be the cause for that? What could be the reason?

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Well, I think the idea of connection with Prabhupada is maybe a little bit, when we talk about that, maybe it’s a little bit sentimental. We’re thinking of connection with Prabhupada as, oh, I got to, you know, experience him directly or something like that. That in one sense is impossible unless you are on a very exalted level like bhava or prema and if you’ve got your spiritual body [Laughs] and you can associate with Prabhupada directly. So, all we do have is whatever is left, that is his literature and we have videos and things like this, films and whatever of Srila Prabhupada. So, all we can gather is something of him by that. So, it’s up to the individual to try to invoke his presence. Some people can do it. Some people have less, you know, ability to do that. But that’s an individual thing and we cannot really control that. All they can do is be devoted and practice devotional service and hopefully they can, through those words, somehow feel his presence eventually.

And as we know, scripture itself is not material. So, it’s non-different from Krishna ultimately [Laughs]. So, similarly, Prabhupada’s words are non-different from Prabhupada [Laughs] because he’s also just conveying the message of Krishna. So, it’s all spiritual shakti. So, somehow or other, we have to regard that, whatever Prabhupada’s words are, also as the shakti of Krishna and full of spiritual potency. So, therefore, they do have power in themselves. They’re not material words. And when we read them, then we can get realization of Prabhupada speaking and, of course, ultimately a realization of Krishna. So, we should have some greater respect for the words and understand that they’re actually spiritual words, not material words, like the name of Krishna is spiritual, not material.

Devotee: I think it’s interesting. You said it’s in the responsibility of the individual to also invoke that presence. Any other, maybe, qualities one should develop in order to be more receptive?

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Well, I think receptivity means actually devotion [Laughs]. So, the more we can be devoted, then the more we can do that. We don’t want just a sentimental feeling or whatever. It depends, well, which is mental, means that the atma or the jiva himself through chanting and hearing and serving, that jiva begins to grow the bhakti-lata. And as that bhakti-lata grows, then you become more sensitive to the hearing process. So, that, of course, is what an actual disciple should be doing. Hearing properly. And then we can absorb the instructions, understand them and execute them. So, that all depends on, let’s say, the submissive attitude, pranipat, of a person who’s listening. And the pranipat obviously means devotion also. So, the more you have, then the more you can receive the message nicely.

Devotee: Yeah, for those who are already able to access Sastra in a more deeper way, often we hear devotees, they explain how they continue to read Prabhupada’s books and they get newer and newer insights, although they have read the books several times. How is that dynamic that we can receive a new instruction from a book that we have read many times before?

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Well, it’s just like the Bhagavatam itself. The Bhagavatam itself is such that because it is non-different from Krishna, it’s ever fresh. And it is words in one sense that we can logically analyze with grammar and meaning, etc. But it goes beyond that because like Sukadeva speaking to Pariksit Maharaj, it’s words, but it’s also spiritual Shakti. So, therefore, it is always available to get deeper and deeper meanings out of it [Laughs]. And it’s not necessarily intellectual or anything. It is simply because as we get more devotion, then we can realize the actual significance of those statements and words. So, the more we become spiritually developed, the more we’ll find wonderful in those words, just as Krishna has inconceivable Shakti. So, in the words themselves, we have inconceivable Shakti. That is revealed as we get deeper and deeper into our devotion.

Devotee: Wonderful. Thank you so much for your wonderful insights that you shared with us. I think this gives us a deeper understanding of how to understand Prabhupada as a pre-eminent Siksha Guru. Maybe as a last word, what realization about Srila Prabhupada as a continuing guide would you like every devotee to know or take from this discussion?

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Ultimately, Prabhupada’s instructions and even the instructions of Lord Caitanya and the Goswamis, even though they wrote so many works and whatever, the instructions are ultimately very simple [Laughs]. You have to develop your spiritual life by chanting Hare Krishna [Laughs] and hearing properly and serving devotees, ultimately comes down to that [Laughs]. And whatever else you may have thoughts about doing this and that, ultimately that’s all secondary [Laughs].

Devotee: So, sticking to the process of just the essence, hearing, chanting and serving the Vaishnavas.

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: [Laughs] Yes.

Devotee: All right. So, thank you so much Maharaj.

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Okay. Hare Krishna!

Devotee: Hare Krishna!

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Thank you. Haribol.

Devotee: Srila Prabhupada ki jai!

HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj: Okay, Hare Krishna [Laughs].

Devotee: Okay, Hare Krishna. Thank you very much.

Devotees: HH Bhanu Swami Maharaj ki jai!!! Srila Prabhupada ki jai!!! Nitai Gaura Premanande Hari Haribol!!!
